What are ringtones
If you have a phone, you probably noticed by then that it makes a sound and also maybe it vibrates (if it is not in the silent mode) every time you are receiving an incoming phone call or you get a message. This sound that your phone makes is called ringtone. Now, with the new generation phones, it also makes a sound if you get an email. Of course that you can set different ringtones to sound if you are receiving a call, and another if you have a new message. Some phones even let you change the settings so you can have a different ringtone for your different contact groups.
But why using or changing your ringtone? If you have your own ringtone, you not feel stressed every time you are on the bus and here that someone’s phone is ringing. You will know that this is not your ringtone, so it’s not your phone who is ringing. Also, it is fun to have different sounds or music as ringtone, just because you literally can have every sound you like as a ringtone. And it can be also practical, if you have a different ringtone to each of your phone’s contact groups (I have a different one for my boyfriends, another for my mum and dad and also a general one for the other people that call me), so when the phone rings, I already know who it is.
There are several types of ringtones, which will fit on certain types of phones: monophonic, polyphonic, truetone or video ringtone. The monophonic and polyphonic are the most old types of ringtones, they are actually a series of musical notes, the difference between them is that for polyphonic ringtones several musical notes are played at a time. The MIDI format was used for years as a polyphonic ringtone. There are also several formats for ringtones, like mp3, 3GP, AAC etc. So if you want a new ringtone, you can search one in your phone settings. Also there are several companies that sell ringtones. Another available option is to make your own personal ringtones, an option available for the oldest phones that have the “composer” option. The actual phone allows you to make your own ringtone by using a mp3. With special software’s you can cut a portion of it and then you can transfer it (by infrared, Bluetooth or card memory) into your phone.
